Satisfying Ending to a Long Day – The Joe Walter Sandwich

I work all day and go to school at night. Some days, I don’t have time to grab dinner in between work and class.  By the time class ends, my only options are usually fast food joints, which I try to avoid.  So imagine how excited I was this week when my professor let us out of our last class of the semester early.  As I was driving home down Beechmont Avenue with a growling stomach, I realized that Izzy’s was still open.  The Anderson location stays open until 9pm Monday-Saturday.  Eager to get home, I walked in and placed a carryout order.  My sandwich was ready in five minutes.  The service was quick without making me feel rushed.  If I wasn’t in such a hurry to get home, I would have stayed at the countertop seating and enjoyed a Yuengling while watching Monday Night Football.  In a nod to the Bengals’ big win on Sunday, I went with the Joe Walter, a turkey and roast beef sandwich with American cheese, lettuce, and tomato on wheat bread, named after the former Bengal great.  The sandwich was accompanied by Izzy’s famous potato pancake and pickles.  It was a very satisfying ending to a long day.

Gearing up for Thanksgiving by Adam Turer

The Suzzy!

Why wait for leftovers? To get in the mood for the upcoming holiday, I tried The Suzzy.  Turkey breast topped with a special cranberry orange relish, cream cheese, and lettuce.  I’d heard about people putting applesauce on Izzy’s world famous potato pancakes, so I gave that a try, too.  All that was missing was a recliner and college football on TV.  It felt like one of my favorite holidays–the day after Thanksgiving.

Check out the Carl Lindner by Adam Turer

For a limited time only, you can honor a Cincinnati icon by enjoying the sandwich named after the late Carl Lindner.  I never met this great man, but I imagine he’d be proud of this creation. It’s simple, but delicious.  Four meats–turkey, corned beef, roast beef, and pastrami–on sweet rye bread with Izzy’s special sauce. I like to think the four meats represent the four sides of Cincinnati–east, west, north, south–and Lindner greatly impacted all four.  Wash it down with a Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda.
