Tasting The P&G

It’s always a treat when Izzy’s rolls out a special new sandwich to honor a Cincinnati institution. In the past year, I’ve tried the Carl Lindner, the Barry Larkin, and the Cincinnality. Some of these limited-time offers turn into permanent menu items. Here’s hoping the latest creation is an Izzy’s fixture for years to come. Izzy’s honors Procter & Gamble’s 175th anniversary with the P&G. This sandwich is definitely one of my favorites. The P&G features pastrami and goetta (my two favorite Izzy’s meats), topped with lettuce and tomato (not enough Izzy’s sandwiches feature these standard sandwich toppings), and Izzy’s special dressing (always welcome), between two perfectly toasted slices of wheat. The crunch of the goetta and the crisp lettuce and tomato give this sandwich a great texture and flavor. You most likely use a P&G product every day. You should try the P&G sandwich at Izzy’s today.

Izzy’s Combo

I’m an indecisive orderer. When I see so many tantalizing options on a restaurant menu, I want to try them all. Next time you’re at Izzy’s and can’t choose between the famous corned beef or the pastrami, order the Izzy’s Combo. You get a balanced portion of both the corned beef and the pastrami. Topped with melted swiss cheese and served on untoasted rye, it’s a match made in deli heaven. I recommend asking for it grilled. And don’t worry, the picture is of the two sandwich halves stacked on top of one another. The actual sandwich is not that intimidating.

Tuna Melt

It might be the lightest item on the menu. It might be the quickest dish to go from order to your table. There is no question that the tuna melt, and the side of pasta salad that comes with it, is a great choice. My pescatarian friends swear by it. While it still left me a little hungry, I was impressed by the flavor. It wasn’t a greasy, mayo-drenched mess like you might expect when you order a tuna melt. Instead, this open-faced sandwich keeps it light and simple, with tuna salad and swiss cheese nestled atop a perfectly toasted slice of wheat.

Trio Salad

You can enjoy not one, not two, not three, but four different salads all at the same time. The Trio Salad features Izzy’s homemade chicken salad, tuna salad, and egg salad, on top of a traditional salad of greens and tomatoes. You can make tiny sandwiches out of each salad with club crackers, or experiment and mix up the different salads to find your favorite combination. If I could choose just one, I’d have to go with the chicken salad, perfectly seasoned with large chunks of chicken. This, like every Izzy’s salad, is a complete and filling meal. If you think you have room, pair it with a bowl or cup of one of Izzy’s many tasty soups.

Pumpkin Spice Pudding!

I don’t know when it first started, but the pumpkin spice invasion has completely swept our nation. For a limited time you can spice up your pudding with some pumpkin. The pumpkin spice whipped cream on top of the pudding alone is worth it. The candy corn pumpkin is the cherry on top. Try this new take on a classic dessert while you can!

Not sure what to have? Get the Daily Special!

There are so many tantalizing options on the menu that I often find myself poring over the menu for several minutes. The best way to avoid this problem is to order the Daily Special, and get three of Izzy’s famous items. For my half sandwich, I went with The Mex Amy’s Way, which substitutes turkey for corned beef in this spicy and most flavorful sandwich. For my soup, I went with beef barley. A bowl of this hearty soup would have stood alone as a great lunch. On my potato pancake, I tried something new. I’d heard of topping the cake with sour cream, so I gave it a shot. I also added plenty of Izzy’s hot sauce. The combination worked well together and the cool sweetness of the sour cream nicely balanced the spices of the potato pancake. So next time you can’t decide what to order, get creative and build your own Daily Special with whatever sandwich, soup, and potato pancake topping you crave.

Wrap it up!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: You can eat light at Izzy’s. The tuna wrap goes great with Izzy’s pasta salad (my favorite non-potato pancake side dish) and a big glass of sweet tea. Perfect for a carryout order to enjoy at a picnic or a park.

Corned Beef and Swiss!

How could I have waited so long to try this classic? It’s so simple, yet so perfect. Look at all that delicious corned beef. I’m more of an adventurous eater. For those of you who like to keep your sandwiches basic, you absolutely can not go wrong with Izzy’s corned beef and swiss. Don’t bother adding condiments or pickles to the sandwich. Just enjoy this classic for what it is, exactly as it’s served.

Soup’s On!

Izzy's Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup

I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love Izzy’s famous Chicken Noodle Soup. It warms the soul and tastes great year-round. It’s hard to want to try anything else, but I encourage you to expand your soup horizon next time you’re at Izzy’s, or this weekend at Oktoberfest. The Beef Barley soup is hearty and filling. The Sweet and Sour Cabbage has a unique flavor and goes great with Izzy’s house salad. And, of course, Friday’s are all about Matzo Ball soup. Every time I declare one of these four as my favorite soup on the menu, my opinion quickly changes. Honestly, my favorite Izzy’s soup is whichever one I’m eating that day. It all depends on what you’re in the mood for. If you want your soup as a meal, I recommend the Beef Barley. If you want some bold flavors, go with the Sweet and Sour Cabbage. If you are in the mood for comfort food, Chicken Noodle hits the spot. If it’s Friday, take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy some Matzo. No matter which soup you choose, you can’t go wrong.

Celebrating Barry Larkin – Izzy’s style

It’s a huge weekend for all Cincinnati Reds fans, but especially for those of us who were too young to grow up with the Big Red Machine.  In many ways, Barry Larkin is OUR Hall of Famer, the first Red we grew up watching to be inducted into the hallowed halls of Cooperstown. As a Cincinnati institution, Izzy’s makes it a point to honor Cincinnati icons like Barry Larkin. The newest sandwich in honor of #11 is not flashy, but gets the job done as well as any sandwich can. It features three of Izzy’s classic meats (pastrami, corned beef, and turkey) with melted swiss on grilled rye. This weekend, I recommend grabbing some Izzy’s carryout to celebrate Cincinnati, the Reds, and Barry Larkin. I’m proud to hail from the same hometown as the Hall of Fame shortstop. Izzy’s is, too!
