Make Izzy’s Your Own!

The day before the Super Bowl, I went into my local Izzy’s and didn’t order anything on the menu. I just needed 3/4 a pound of Izzy’s scrumptious pastrami, my favorite deli meat. I was making a hot pastrami reuben dip for my Super Bowl party the following day.

(recipe here: http://sarahsprague.com/2010/10/06/the-friday-football-foodie-hot-pastrami-reuben-dip/)

While I was sitting at the counter waiting for my bag of perfectly sliced meat, I struck up a conversation with another Izzy’s patron. He was at the counter to order a pound of Izzy’s famous corned beef, to take home and use in his own corned beef hash recipe. If you have a favorite Izzy’s ingredient, you can go to any Izzy’s location and request whatever you need to complete your dish. I also included plenty of Izzy’s pickles, sold at Kroger, in my recipe. Like the Izzytizers I’ve ordered for the party in past years, the hot pastrami reuben dip was a hit. Whether it be corned beef, pastrami, pickles, or any other ingredient, Izzy’s ingredients will boost your recipe and help make your dish irresistible.

An Interview with 110 Challenger Thomas Dall by Adam Turer

What made you want to take on this beast of a challenge?

This is all my fault. I was sitting at home late at night, hungry. Somehow it suddenly occurred to me that I should do this reuben challenge and needed to drag my two friends long for the ride. Bernie has won some eating contests and Frankie once ate an entire Crave case at White Castle in an hour. All my idea. All my fault.

Did you think you could do it?

I did not think that it was possible to eat the entire sandwich. I did however, believe I could eat 3/4 of the sandwich. The sheer density of this monster sandwich was a shock to me. I still cannot believe how hearty and tough that rye bread was. Soaking it in soup or water hardly helped. I am pretty sure I had nightmares about that bread.

At what point did you realize the Reuben had you beat?

I knew after the first quarter. I had a good start. Downed the first quarter in six or seven minutes. But I knew it was over. I felt like I had downed two Chipolte burritos. I was shocked to be so full after just one quarter.

What was the best part of your experience? Worst?

The best part was eating the first quarter of the sandwich. It was delicious. The second quarter was not nearly as fun. A lot more like work. The worst part was the anticipation of waiting for the sandwich to come. It took what felt like forever. The fact that they had to make three probably added to the wait, but at the time it felt like psychological warfare.

Any advice for future competitors?

Train. Train. Train. Get a routine and train for about a month before trying this challenge. Make sure your stomach is stretched out and can handle that much food. I did no training and could only eat half.

Did you eat your leftovers? Have you been back to Izzy’s since your attempt?

I did, in fact eat all the leftovers. I did the challenge on a Saturday night and finished the sandwich by Monday. I had one quarter Sunday for lunch and the other quarter for lunch at work on Monday. I did however, use normal buns for the bread. I have not been back to Izzy’s since, but it has nothing to do with the challenge. I have not really been out to eat around an Izzy’s lately. I would eat an Izzy’s Reuben right now if I had one.

Favorite menu item at Izzy’s?

Goetta Reuben, extra goetta. Time for me to goetta outta here!

The Pastrami Reuben!

Pretzel bread. Pretzel bread. How I love you, pretzel bread. You could put just about anything between two slices of Izzy’s delectable pretzel roll and I’d enjoy it.  The Pastrami Reuben features pastrami (my favorite Izzy’s meat), swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and spicy mustard.  All of those ingredients are great, but they take a backseat to the perfectly doughy pretzel roll.

Izzytizer’s for your Super Bowl Party!

Shortly after Man vs Food Nation: Cincinnati premiered, we hosted a viewing party for family and friends.  Plenty of food was served, but the first things to disappear were the Izzytizers.  A tray full of tiny versions of Izzy’s favorites: the classic Reuben, the Mex, and the roast beef.  My friends devoured the sandwiches and the accompanying tray of pickles within about 20 minutes.  We’ll be ordering Izzytizers for our annual Super Bowl party this Sunday.  I think this time we might order two.  You can call your local Izzy’s today and they will have your order ready to pick up before the game on Sunday.

Gearing up for Thanksgiving by Adam Turer

The Suzzy!

Why wait for leftovers? To get in the mood for the upcoming holiday, I tried The Suzzy.  Turkey breast topped with a special cranberry orange relish, cream cheese, and lettuce.  I’d heard about people putting applesauce on Izzy’s world famous potato pancakes, so I gave that a try, too.  All that was missing was a recliner and college football on TV.  It felt like one of my favorite holidays–the day after Thanksgiving.
