I’m not known for my vegetarian tendencies. When I think of a sandwich, I think of meat. However, the Veggie Reuben will delight the vegetarian crowd without alienating the traditional carnivores. If your favorite part of a reuben is the sauerkraut, you will especially love this sandwich. I am a big fan of olives and Izzy’s rye roll. A heaping mound of sauerkraut topped with olive topilove and fresh, thick tomatoes and swiss cheese is a nice, light alternative to the classic reuben. You don’t need to be a veg-head to enjoy this take on the World Famous Reuben.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream Cake. Do I need to say anything else? I didn’t think so, but I will anyway. The newest dessert on the menu is delightful. The bottom layer of chocolate cake is moist, but not crumbly. The ice cream and whipped cream on top are covered in chocolate chips and cookie dough bites. It’s not overly rich or heavy and can be enjoyed on its own, or after devouring a delicious sandwich. Go get one today, before I eat them all.

T.G.I.F., S.W.C.E.M.B.S.F.I. Thank goodness it’s Friday, so we can enjoy matzo ball soup from Izzy’s. This specialty is only served on Fridays, but it is worth the weekly wait. It’s great on a cold Winter day, but just as delicious on a warm Spring day. The fist-sized matzo balls are impressive and tasty. If you don’t want the whole bowl, get the Izzy’s special, a cup of matzo ball soup with half a sandwich of your choice and a side of your choice. Either way, put some matzo in your Friday.

Celebrate Cincy de Mayo!

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo (or any day, really) with the Mex. Izzy’s famous corned beef, topped with jalapenos, sweet yellow onions, melted Swiss and Izzy’s special chipotle sauce on rye toast. You know how I feel about onions, but these sweet yellow onions only add to the flavor. This sandwich will wake you up, but the heat is not overpowering. I wouldn’t think to top the corned beef with onion or jalapeno, but the flavor combination of the ingredients on the Mex is outstanding.

Adam tries the Salami Combo

Remember when you were a kid and you would snack on a dollop of cream cheese rolled up in a slice of salami (or a dozen of them)? Izzy’s Salami Combo has the grown-up version of that classic snack and it is delicious. Thick slices of all-beef salami, topped with cream cheese, tomato, and red onion (I left the onion off of mine). The best part might be the spread of pesto that is smeared on the toasted sourdough roll. I’ll put pesto on anything, and it takes this sandwich to another level.

Corned beef isn’t for everyone. While I don’t understand that, I respect it. You might not even like pastrami. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a delicious Izzy’s Reuben. Not sure I’ve met someone who doesn’t like a turkey sandwich. So why not turn that boring turkey sandwich into a Reubenesque treat? Top it with Izzy’s sweet & sour slaw, melted swiss cheese, and Izzy’s special sauce. Put it all between two slices of Izzy’s rye roll, which has overtaken pretzel bread as my favorite sandwich holder. Wash it down with a Dr. Brown’s root beer and have yourself a great lunch.

Keep it simple. That’s what Izzy’s does with its chicken salad. Big chunks of delicious all-white chicken are topped with lettuce and tomato. What sets this simple creation apart is the lightly toasted sourdough roll. The crunch from the roll is an excellent complement to the tender chicken. I want to take this sandwich on a picnic.

Roast Beef Wrap

My lovely wife doesn’t have quite the same appetite that I have. When we go to Izzy’s, she prefers the wraps. The best part is, she doesn’t have to compromise any of the great Izzy’s flavors. We recently split a roast beef wrap. Each Izzy’s wrap has its own special toppings that make it unique. The roast beef comes with diced onions, tomatoes, melted American cheese and a parmesan peppercorn ranch dressing. You can always choose your own side; our favorite is the potato salad. The wrap is an excellent lighter option on a hot summer (or spring) day.

If you know me well, you know how I feel about onions. Just seeing the word on the menu is usually a deal-breaker for me. But, I committed to review every item on the Izzy’s menu and it was finally time to try something with onion on it. I am so glad I did. The Spicy Delight now stands in my top three Izzy’s sandwiches. The rye roll with pastrami and melted swiss is near perfection, and the addition of a blend of minced olives and sweet peppers tops it off nicely. Despite my hypersensitivity to onions, I found it to complement the other flavors, rather than overwhelm. This was a major step in getting over my strong dislike of an ingredient and I look forward to my next Spicy Delight.

The Lenten Special

If you want to eat fish on Friday, but weren’t persuaded by my review of the Cod Reuben, never fear: the cod sandwich is available every day during Lent for just $6.99. In my opinion, it does not compare to the Cod Reuben, but the quality of the generous portion of the crispy, succulent cod has not changed. The cod sandwich keeps it simple, adding just lettuce and tartar sauce to a Kaiser roll. I recommend a side of Izzy’s coleslaw on the side and a Dr. Brown’s root beer to wash it down.
