Apps and Beer

The best thing about Izzy’s craft beer dinners might not be the beer. In my humble opinion, the appetizers specially prepared for these events rival the beers with which they are paired. The first dinner featured everyone’s favorite pickles, deep fried with a special dipping sauce. The second dinner introduced me to fried sauerkraut balls and a horseradish-based dipping sauce, which far exceeded my expectations. I cannot wait to see what Izzy’s comes up with for the third craft beer dinner, on Tuesday, March 20 at the Anderson location. Until these apps are added to the menu, the only place to try them is at the craft beer dinners. So come out to Anderson tomorrow night to enjoy some special food paired with quality craft beers.

Oh. My. Goetta!

Oh. My. Goetta. I tried the Goetta Reuben once a long time ago and was underwhelmed. Either Izzy’s has greatly improved this menu item, or my first experience was an aberration. When I tried the Reuben with Cincinnati’s favorite sausage this time around, it was tremendous. Two perfectly cooked slices of Glier’s goetta are topped with all the classic reuben fixings and served on toasted rye. Now I know why this sandwich is the favorite Izzy’s choice of so many of my friends. I’ll definitely be back soon for another go-round with Goetta.

The Cod Reuben!

Stop. If you haven’t tried Izzy’s Cod Reuben yet, do yourself a favor and go get one today.

Stop. If you have tried the sandwich also known as The Codfather, you can end your search for Cincinnati’s best sandwich.

Izzy’s did all of us a favor last year, when it added this formerly seasonal item to the permanent menu. If you’re looking for the best piece of fish on a Friday this Lenten season, go to Izzy’s for lunch and maybe again for dinner. You don’t have to wait for a Friday during Lent to enjoy this masterpiece of succulent fried cod topped with a slice of cheese and sweet-n-sour coleslaw. You can get it 365 days a year. It will soon be one of your favorites. You’re welcome.

Adam Turer checks out the Daily Special

You’re not feeling well, but you dragged yourself out of bed in the morning to face the workday despite feeling under the weather. The clock slowly ticks toward lunchtime. You need something to make you feel better and help you get through this day. You need a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup. I don’t like to drink broth, and Izzy’s gives you plenty of noodles, veggies, and chicken to fill your bowl.  You can get that, plus a slice of Izzy’s fresh rye bread, half a sandwich of your choice, and a potato pancake, all for just $8. The Daily Special is the most customizable way to get all of your Izzy’s favorites in one meal. A bowl of soup of your choice plus half a sandwich of your choice. The rye, the pancake, and the limitless pickles are also included. Pair it with a Dr. Brown’s cream soda, and head back to work feeling much better. If you already felt good, you’ll spend the rest of your day feeling great.

Turkey Sandwich!

Keep it simple. Every time I open the Izzy’s menu, my eyes naturally gravitate to the famous Reubens and Izzy’s specialties in the center. Don’t sleep on the left side of the menu, though.  I had a simple turkey sandwich and it was just the comfort food I needed.  Turkey, lettuce, and tomato on rye bread. I like to add Izzy’s classic pickles to all my sandwiches. Izzy’s is famous for its specialties, but it is still a top-notch deli at heart, serving all kinds of quality sandwiches.

Craft Beer Dinner Review by Adam Turer

If you were not at the inaugural Izzy’s craft beer dinner in Florence on February 7, you missed out on a great event.  Store manager John Bent did a terrific job organizing the dinner.  The featured craft beers came from Widmer Brothers brewery in Portland, Oregon.  Their local rep, Tyler, did an excellent job of telling the company’s history and giving background on the three different beers we were offered that evening. Pairing the brews with a three-course meal of Izzy’s favorites was a hit.  I did not think that Izzy’s perfect pickles could possibly be improved upon. I was wrong. The first course was an appetizer of fried pickles with Widmer Brothers’s Rotator IPA-O’Ryely.  If the next two courses were more plates of fried pickles, nobody would have complained.  Next was soup.  I went with beef barley and I find it hard to believe that Izzy’s makes a better soup.  The soup, potato pancake, and half of a reuben were paired with Widmer Brothers’s Drifter Pale Ale.  I, along with several other patrons, needed a to-go box for most of my sandwich.  Finally, John brought out several mini cheesecakes to pair with the final beer, the W Series Dark Saison, just released this week. More than 30 people in attendance enjoyed a night of great beer and better food.  I am very much looking forward to the next Izzy’s craft beer dinner and I hope to see you there.

The Pastrami Reuben!

Pretzel bread. Pretzel bread. How I love you, pretzel bread. You could put just about anything between two slices of Izzy’s delectable pretzel roll and I’d enjoy it.  The Pastrami Reuben features pastrami (my favorite Izzy’s meat), swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and spicy mustard.  All of those ingredients are great, but they take a backseat to the perfectly doughy pretzel roll.

Izzytizer’s for your Super Bowl Party!

Shortly after Man vs Food Nation: Cincinnati premiered, we hosted a viewing party for family and friends.  Plenty of food was served, but the first things to disappear were the Izzytizers.  A tray full of tiny versions of Izzy’s favorites: the classic Reuben, the Mex, and the roast beef.  My friends devoured the sandwiches and the accompanying tray of pickles within about 20 minutes.  We’ll be ordering Izzytizers for our annual Super Bowl party this Sunday.  I think this time we might order two.  You can call your local Izzy’s today and they will have your order ready to pick up before the game on Sunday.

Florence offers a Great Chicken Sandwich

There is an Izzy’s less than five minutes from my home in Anderson.  There is an Izzy’s less than five minutes from my office downtown.  Regardless, I think I might start visiting the Izzy’s in Florence on a regular basis. The Florence location is across the street from the mall, next door to Starbucks.  For now, it is the only place to get the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, which is even better than I expected.  Instead of the typical breaded chicken doused in buffalo sauce, Izzy’s Spicy Chicken is a lightly breaded fried chicken breast, topped with lettuce, cheese and an outstanding sweet chili sauce, served on sourdough bread.  I’ll be back in Florence on February 7 for the inaugural Izzy’s Craft Beer Dinner and I hope to see you there.

The Corned Beef Everything and Online Ordering!

The Corned Beef  Everything really does have it all. It will satisfy your craving for Izzy’s at any time of day.  I was in the mood for brunch one day, but was busy working downtown.  I used Izzy’s convenient online ordering (available at both downtown and the Covington locations) and my order was promptly ready for pickup.  The Everything is Izzy’s famous corned beef piled high on a toasted everything bagel, topped with a thick slice of tomato and Izzy’s special dijon cream cheese.  One of my favorite things about Izzy’s is how customizable the menu is and how much the staff respects its customers.  I decided to add my own twist to the sandwich and had a fried egg (over hard) added to the bagel.  I got back to my office and savored every bite of this creation, along with a side of chunky applesauce.  It was a terrific twist on brunch, regardless of the fact that it was 1:00 in the afternoon.
